The Hunger Games.

Posted By: Ace Burpee · 11/8/2010 3:58:00 PM

Ok, so this book club idea is officially the greatest. For starters, Kaitlin described The Hunger Games with the phrase "full of action-packed Awesome", which totally rules. Secondly, I looked into these books as I had never heard of them and they sound incredible. Seriously awesome work Kaitlin. Her note is below.

Ace, You should also read The Hunger Games, which are found in the kids section but are so not only for kids. They are full of action-packed Awesome and you should definitally give them a shot. Hope you like 'em! From: Kaitlin Smith

The Glass Castle.

I remember this book being on the NY Times bestseller list forever. I think it was there for a couple of years. That's a good sign. Thanks for the suggestion Michelle. Her note is below...
Read The Glass Castle. A great memoir written by Jeanette Walls, Ace. Her childhood was interesting, her parents eccentric, and afterward as an adult she tries to forget everything about her childhood and her parents... until she runs in to them years later while living in NYC. It's a book that you can't put down, you'll spend an entire evening reading it. From: Michelle

Tales of New York City.

Posted By: Ace Burpee · 10/26/2010 3:33:00 PM
I've seen the movie "American Gangster" with Denzel Washington. In fact I own it. I dig Denzel. The book that inspired the movie though, is equally awesome, plus then some. It's written by Mark Jacobson. He knows New York City... and in his book American Gangster and Other Tales of New York... he takes you inside NYC with some of the coolest stories ever. Venture into the world of Harlem's most powerful politician, there's a segment on 9/11 conspiracy theorists, find out who the Last Irish Cowboy is. This book is awesome. This isn't the New York of Times Square and 5th Avenue. This is New York as only someone who knows the town could write. I love it. I think I'm going to read it again. Reading... still cool.

I heart Malcolm Gladwell.

Posted By: Ace Burpee · 10/25/2010 12:01:00 PM
I've read every book Malcolm Gladwell has written. I like the way he looks at things, and the way he thinks about things. He's super interesting. I'm tempted to subscribe to the New Yorker just to read more of him. I think I'd like you all to read "What the Dog Saw". It, like everything else he's written... is awesome. Ever wonder why there is really only one flavour of ketchup while there are hundreds of different types of mustard? Well nor had I, but Gladwell explains how this happens. It's so much fun I can't even tell you. Why do some of us choke and others panic? How does Cesar Millan do what he does? I love this book so much. Now that I'm writing about it I want to read again. so I shall. As should you. Bonus: Malcolm Gladwell is Canadian. Peace.

Gina, I've done the same thing!!!

Posted By: Ace Burpee · 10/19/2010 8:48:00 PM
Gina sent the e-mail below. I love it. Really love it. I've done this before. You race out and pick up a book because of something you've heard or read and then read it right through to the end without stopping because you simply can't stop reading it. It's that good. Great, great feeling. Gina gets it!!!
Ace,
I recently heard a recording of Maya Angelou reading her poem: "On the Pulse of Morning" at the inauguration of the American President Bill Clinton in 1993. I was inspired to look for any of her poetry, what I found was a biography of sorts entitled "Maya Angelou, A Glorious Celebration" by Marcia Anne Gillespie, Rosa Johnson Butler and Richard A. Long. Ace, I kid you not, I bought it and by about 2AM that next morning, I had read the entire thing. So inspiring! For all the women out there who aren't ...
